ARE CHRISTIANS GOOD PEOPLE ?

Good. A four letter word, so simple, yet complicated enough to keep everyone on toes, aiming for it.
To begin, let's define what good is, according to the dictionary.
1) Having the required qualities of a high standard
2) To be desired or approved of
3) Virtuous, right, commendable
4) That which is morally righteous
And so on...

Majority of people, lead with these dictionary definitions of what good is. Personally, I used to.

I spent all my life calling myself a good person. Why? Because I really believed I was. I gave to the needy, I stood up for minorities, I WENT TO CHURCH, I empathized with people from different walks of life and most importantly, PEOPLE called me good. On the other hand, when I would meet someone who saw me as something other than good, my ego would be bruised and I would spend that time trying to fix their perception of me. Just to get the magic words out of them "You are good". Recently, I realized, we spend our lives trying to outdo the goodness of others. Something that can and will never be enough because you will soon realize, there will always be someone out there that does it better than you. It's an exhausting rat trap of always trying to prove a point and not even to yourself but to the society around us. I call it, the textbook way of being good.

But being a Christian, today I want to explore what the Bible says about being good.

"For what does the Scripture say? 'Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness' "

BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE ON GOODNESS

We are living in an age where we, as "modern" christians, are pushing back or trying to, so as not to be a footstool of any human being. While on the flip side of it, is to use negative situations to go deeper into what God has to say. And so, it's through someone pointing out that I was flawed and my goodness is not enough, that I went searching for answers and came across a verse that stopped me in my tracks.

Mark 10:18
"And Jesus said to him 'why do you call me good? No one is good except God alone.' "

I never even realized up to this moment, that I had been holding my breath for so long. That I lived in this world "trying" for something that was impossible. This verse, highlights that true goodness is an attribute of God alone.

Another scripture that addressed my flawed way of thinking about goodness is:-

2Corinthians 10:12
"We do not dare classify or compare ourselves with some who commend themselves. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise."

These statements reminded me or rather, reminds us that human standards of goodness are often subjective and flawed. Just because someone is called a Christian doesn't automatically mean they are good people. We are all sinners and fall short of God's glory (Romans 3:23)

In conclusion,
The bible says in Romans 6:18
"And having been set free from sin, we have become slaves of righteousness"
Being a slave to righteousness implies being indebted to, or working towards righteousness. As Christians, we strive to live righteously, but we acknowledge that our goodness comes from God, and not from ourselves.

By understanding that nobody is inherently good and that we all need God's grace, we can avoid judging others and focus on our journey towards righteousness.

Shalom.

DO CHRISTIANS FOLLOW THE LAW? (Torah)

One day, while watching a movie, a certain line stood out to me: "The law doesn't want you to fight, it wants you dead." This got me thinking about the common debate among believers regarding our relationship with the law. Many times, you hear some believers say that we are not free from the law because Jesus Christ said He did not come to abolish the law but to fulfill it. As it is written in Matthew 5:17-18: “ Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.” Some interpret this to mean that we are meant to conform to a direct way of living as the law demands. However, I want to shed light on this matter without disapproving the texts. Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the Law as He is the Word that became flesh. As John 1:14 states: "The Word became fl...

WAS THE LAW REMOVED?

I'd like to begin with Jesus’ own words “ Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. Therefore whoever relaxes one of these commandments and teach others to do the same will be called least in the Kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them, will be called great in the Kingdom of heaven. ” Matthew 5:17-20 This statement sets the tone for everything that follows. Jesus didn’t come to tear down what was given through Moses. He came to reveal its full meaning; to translate it from stone tablets to living hearts(which the word calls tablets of the heart). In a much clear sense, to translate it from the natural to the spiritual. To bring about the full expression of what it is. To complete it.  As depicted in the following verse Matthew 5:21-22-- ' You have heard...

THE POWER OF BLOOD

Christianity is often viewed as a very bloody religion. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, there's so much blood spilled. This might seem strange or even off-putting to some, but there's a profound significance behind it. I remember something my pastor said that really stood out to me. He talked about how, during our feasts and celebrations here in Africa, we go big. We slaughter cows, goats, chickens, and more, often doing it outside. When people come across the blood on the ground, they usually skip over it or avoid stepping on it. The same thing happens when someone is injured and their blood spills on the ground, nobody wants to step on it. Why is that? The natural mind struggles to comprehend this, and we often come up with elaborate explanations for our actions. Some might see it as tampering with evidence in the case of an injury, while others, especially in more superstitious communities, might view it as a sign of disrespect. Regardless, we develop an insti...
